In the process. tar-free, cold, low temperature carbonisation gas is produced. Wood briquettes are charged automatically through a gas lock (1). A safety valve closes automatically, especially under loss of power conditions. Preferably, a pneumatic rammer (2) monitors the level of the contents, simultaneously preventing combustion cavity formation. High in the retort, the moist air is preferably extracted and returned to the gasification air. The pressure sensor (4) at the top of the retort preferably controls the valve continuously, to maintain a lower pressure there. The charcoal is preferably ignited with hot air (5), which also brings the bed and its oxidation zone to operational temperature.
