In a hollow purpose-made block, insulating inserts in the form of panels can be introduced into cavities intended for this purpose and they are held in a frictionally locking manner in said cavities such that air-filled cavity portions remain on at least one longitudinal side of said insulating inserts. In order to improve the securing of the insulating inserts in the cavities and to protect said inserts from damage when pushing them into the cavities, the invention provides that the cavities at the level of one of the two bearing surfaces of the hollow purpose-made block narrow, for the purpose of securing the insulating inserts, to a width corresponding to the cross-section thereof, but exhibit a larger cross-section at the remaining level in order to form the cavity portions which are desirably filled with air. This measure brings about the additional advantage that one of the two bearing surfaces of the hollow purpose-made block is closed over its entire surface and can be used as carrier for a mortar bed without there being a danger of mortar falling into the cavities, used for insulation, and impairing the insulating effect thereof.
