In order to shorten the non-availability times in operation of an electrical appliance having a rechargeable battery, the charger according to the invention is constructed with a rapid-charging appliance with automatic disconnection and with signal transmitters which are controlled by the electronics and periodically transmit interrupted signals at a low frequency when the voltage oscillates between the final charging voltage and the rated voltage after charging has been completed. The low signal frequency indicates that the electrical appliance is ready. As a battery ages by losing its forming capability, the signal frequency becomes higher and higher which gives an early indication that the battery must be replaced. Figures 1 and 2 show a charger having a charging housing (1), which is constructed as a charging stand, for accommodating a soldering iron (2) in the charging and readiness position. According to Figures 5 and 8, the charger can also be arranged in a plug housing (26, 27), the electronics (which are not shown) being located in the space (32). A connection to the electrical appliance passes through the opening (34). Visual signal transmitters are designated by 10 and 39 and acoustic signal transmitters by 11 and 38 in the figures. <IMAGE>
