PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a magnetic recording medium that a high output is obtd. while suppressing increase in noise during storage in a short wavelength recording with <=0.8μm center recording wavelength which is required for a small-sized high picture quality video tape or the like. SOLUTION: In this magnetic recording medium having a magnetic coating film on one surface of a supporting body and a back coating layer on the other surface, the magnetic coating film contains both of a metal magnetic powder and an inorg. powder having >=5 Mohs' hardness, and the back coating layer contains a carbon black as primary particles or aggregates having a larger diameter than the major axial length of the metal magnetic powder above described. The sum thickness of the magnetic coating film, supporting body and back coating layer is <=14μm. The elastic modulus in the longitudinal direction is larger than the elastic modulus in the width direction but is not larger than twice of the elastic modulus in the width direction.
