A method and arrangement for conducting air filtration by biofilter operation. The arrangement generally includes at least one bioreactor bed (40) through which air to be purified is passed through inlet (72). The bed (40) is divided into lower stratified region (117) and upper stratified region (118). The lower region (117) has porous screen (122), strata of volcanic rock (124), strata of wood or bark chips mixed with soil (125) and strata containing a bacteria-loaded mixture of peat, topsoil, vermiculite and some bark (126). The upper region (118) also comprises porous screen (129), strata of volcanic rock (130), strata of wood or bark chips mixed with soil (131) and strata of topsoil, vermiculite, bark and peat (132). The arrangement is configured to draw downwardly and the operation is conducted under pressure of less than ambient.
