The device incorporates the head (6) of an ink jet printer for application of a continuous marking (7) to a strip of paper (5). Reinforcement strips are cut from the strip for gluing to the spines in a receptacle (14). The speed of advance of the paper strip is measured by a revolution counter (9) and communicated (11) to a controller (10). The strip is unwound at a continuously varying rate from its roll (4) and passes a sensor (8) of the printed marking which also sends signals (13) to the controller. The head is controlled (12) so that the intensity of the marking remains the same whatever the speed of the paper.
