The X-ray source has an X-ray tube contained within a housing (2) provided with an exit window for the emitted radiation and a cooling device with a cooling medium circulation pump positioned on the outside of the housing. The outer mantle of the housing is provided with cooling ribs (14) transverse or parallel to its longitudinal axis, lying in a cooling air stream for dissipating heat from the cooling medium fed along the housing inside wall.
