Measurement of rectilinear displacement of valves or pistons on test bench

The measurement is of displacement of mechanical components, where access to the ends or extremities is not easy or possible. The component (11) has a surface (12) machined or produced at a very slight incline with a known angle and two sensors (15A,15B) are fixed at either side of the movement axis (A) of the component. The gap between the sensors and surface is measured before and after displacement. From the geometry of the component the lateral displacement of the component can be calculated using the tangent of the inclination angle. A calculation means or processor (30) receives signals from the sensors and uses these to carry out the necessary calculations.
