A syringe consists of a barrel (I) with a central projection (2) on the inner surface of its base (the needle outlet being situated off centre), a plunger (II) and a piston (V). The piston has a flexible face (12), e.g. of rubber, and is connected to the end of the plunger by a flexible coupling (III) with an inner locking rod (IV). When the piston reaches the end of the barrel during the syringe's first use the central projection (2) presses into the flexible piston face and dislodges the locking rod of the piston/plunger coupling, so that when the plunger is withdrawn the piston stays in the end of the barrel, so that it cannot be re-used.
