4-Fluorosalicylic acid derivatives represented by general formula (1) and a process for producing the same, wherein X<1>, X<2>, and X<3> each independently represents hydrogen or halogeno, exclusive of the case where all of X<1>, X<2>, and X<3> are hydrogen or fluorine at the same time. The 4-fluorosalicylic acid derivatives are novel compounds not found in the literature. They can be easily converted to 3-fluorophenol derivatives extremely useful as liquid crystals, recording materials, and intermediates for drugs and agricultural chemicals. They are highly suitable for use as intermediates for the 3-fluorophenol derivatives.
