The air-conditioning device has a control unit which controls an air switching flap (6) determining the ratio of external air and recirculated air, in dependence on the detected air quality of the external air. The air switching flap is held in the recirculated air position when the vehicle velocity is below a given value, independent of the detected external air quality and for a given delay interval after reaching this velocity. The permissible air quality threshold may be raised as the vehicle velocity drops.
