Vehicle movement amplitude detection device mounted on=board vehicle

The movement amplitude detection device uses a marking mechanism (10,14,16), e.g. a laser device, mounted on a vehicle, for providing a hot point as a marking on the road surface and a cooperating infrared imaging device (14,16,18,20) for detecting the marking at a given relative time spacing. The amplitude of the vehicle movement is calculated from the variation in the positions of a number of successive road surface markings during the latter time spacings. The markings may be evaluated to provide the vehicle velocity and direction of movement.
