METHOD FOR PRODUCING .ALPHA.-ALKOXY-.ALPHA.-TRIFLUOROMETHYL-ARYL ACETIC ACID ESTERS AND -ARYL ACETIC ACIDS

.alpha.-alkoxy-.alpha.-trifluoromethyl-aryl acetic acid ester and -aryl acetic acids are obtained from easily accessible reagents without the formation of benzoic acids as secondary components and with good yields and purity in short reaction times by making phenylketoester react in the presence of a solvent of a fluoride at least slightly soluble in the reaction mixture as catalyzer with trifluormethyl-trimethylsilan, by making the trimethylsilylether thus obtained react with an alcoholate or an alkaline-adjusted alcohol and by finally splitting hydrolytically or with an acid the ester to produce .alpha.-alkoxy-.alpha.-trifluoromethyl-aryl acetic acids.
