The device has a seat retainer, which has a base part (3) fixed opposite to a vehicle and a laterally sliding part (4), on which a seat (1) is arranged. A pressure chamber (9) is formed between the base part and the laterally sliding part, which is activatable by a crash sensor. A pyrotechnic device with an ignition member is arranged in the laterally sliding part. The base part is formed as a guide tube (3), and the laterally sliding part is formed as a slide tube (4), which slides in the guide tube and is movable laterally to the vehicle centre. The slide tube is provided with a driver member (5) for the vehicle seat. The pressure chamber is formed between the guide tube and the slide tube.
