In a papermaking machine, the press blanket (32) travels on a free path in contact with the paper web (P) after a roller press gap (20,26) in the press section or between a press gap (26) and the drying section (10). The water retention character of the press blanket (32) is such that there is no return of water to the web (P) when the blanket (32) and web (P) are in contact with each other after a press gap (20), round the press roller (12) or round a guide roller (22). Preferably two guide rollers (22,24) are in succession between the successive roller press gaps (20,26). The web (P), together with the blanket (32), pass through the first upstream press gap (20) and then round part of the circumference of the press roller (12) and then round part of the circumference of the leading guide roller (22) to move round part of the circumference surface of the downstream drying cylinder (10). The press blanket (32) is then separated from the web (P), and returned round a guide roller. Or the blanket (32) and web (P) are separated after the guide roller (24), where the web (P) is carried by a second blanket (36) to the downstream roller press gap (26). The press roller (12) is a central roller in an array with other press rollers (14,16) operating with it. The central press roller (12) is of a ceramic material. The web guide roller (22) has a swing movement. At least one web guide roller (22,24) has inner suction.
