The invention concerns a filter, in particular for filtering the lubricating oil in an internal combustion engine. The filter comprises a housing (13) with an untreated oil feed and a pure oil outlet. A filter element (16) is disposed in the housing (13). The housing (13) is provided with a safety element (29) which effectively prevents the housing from being closed with a cover (10) if the filter element (16) has not been fitted.
