The belt tensioner is in a unit which has a belt on a winding spool connected by a releasable coupling to the tensioner. The tensioner, activated by an acceleration sensor, has a casing (1) in which there is a coupling case (30) for the releasable coupling. A band (4) is partly wound onto this. One end (41) of it is fixed to the coupling case and the other (42) to the casing. This leaves a cavity between the coupling case and the inner wall (20) of the casing, in which the unwound part of the band runs from the coupling case tangentially, maintaining the direction of the curve.
