The performance of data storage devices based on flat glass disks (hard drives) may be materially improved by ensuring flatness of the annular disk over its entire flat surface area. In accordance with the invention, the flatness of the disk faces may extend right up to their edges by grinding and/or polishing flat an oversize blank after the outer edge of the final disk has been defined in the blank by way of a laser-induced blind crack. After grinding and polishing, the portion of the blank outside the desired final edge is split off.
