Spring support column for vehicle bonnet or boot lid

The spring column (10) is used for supporting a lifting lid, eg. the bonnet lid or boot lid of a motor vehicle. It has eye fittings at the ends (16,17) and there is a first large-diameter elongated coil spring (13) acting in compression between them. Two elongated U-shaped strips of metal (11,12) are attached to the ends so that they extend inwards and interpenetrate, the planes of the two U-shapes being at right-angles to each other. The first coil spring surrounds the two U-shapes which act as guide members. A second small-diameter elongated coil spring (20) under compression is installed inside the two guide members and presses outward against the ends of the U-shapes.
