Rotation speed measuring instrument for fitness equipment

The instrument (3) for equipment where a drive shaft (1) and drive element (2) are linked by an elastic component for force transmission, uses an optical system for determining the turning movement of the shaft and drive relative to one another. This consists of two bar-coded discs (4,5), one on the shaft and the other on the drive. These have concentric codes in parallel circles. The optical head reads the codes as they turn. The instrument is then linked to a calculator which converts the movement into a measure of rotation speed. The system is simple to construct and to calibrate and gives trouble-free operation to the highest standards of accuracy.
