The air bag (11) is located, when not inflated, behind a section of trim panel (23), which forms a cover, and which is designed in such a way, as to open by tearing under the pressure of the air bag inflating, during its deployment into the passenger compartment (H) of the vehicle. A flexible cover piece (20) is provided, as part of the mechanism, and is fitted in such a way as to cover the ruptured edge (A) of the trim panel (23), after the bag is activated. The air bag is contained folded into a module (10) and held in place by means of a cover (15), which is provided with a tear strip (17). The flexible cover piece extends over the top surface of this inner cover towards the centre line of the module.
