<p>During a soil tilling operation eg ploughing a field, a measure of the soil strength is determined during one pass across the field and is used to set the width of the plough 60 when the plough makes the next pass across the field in the same direction. Separate values may be determined and used when the plough is moving in the alternate direction. A number of values for the soil strength are measured during the initial pass and the average or most frequently occurring value is taken as the measure of soil strength. The aim is to control the plough width whilst parameters of the tractor 10 such as engine output and ploughing speed are varied to optimise performance eg to maximise working rate or minimise fuel consumption.</p> |
