Preparation of the isomers (R) and (S) alpha -methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzeneethanamine (I) comprises carrying out a stereospecific reductive amination with (R) or (S)-alpha -methylbenzylamine (II) on 1-(3-trifluoromethyl)phenyl-2-propanone (III) to respectively give the diastereoisomer (R),(R) or (S),(S)-N-(1-phenylethyl)-alpha -methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzeneethanamine (IV) and then carrying out reductive debenzylation of (IV) or its salt with an organic or inorganic acid: Also claimed are (S),(S)-N-(1-phenylethyl)-alpha -methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzeneethanamine and (R),(R)-N-(1-phenylethyl)-alpha -methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzeneethanamine and their salts with organic or inorganic acids, specifically hydrochloride salts.
