A guidance and displacement device (35) is introduced through the control rod adaptor to a position close to the passage communicating with the annular space inside the mechanism to be examined. A flexible blade (24), carrying at one end the optical arrangement (26) for lighting and receiving light signals, is then introduced through the guidance device (35) into the annular space until it reaches the component to be examined. The received light signals are then transmitted via optical fibres fixed along the length of the blade (24) to an analyser (52) that can reconstruct the image.
