PURPOSE:To prevent damage to an original platen and a light source by extinguishing the light source if the light source stops at the same position for a prescribed time or longer even when a drive means of an optical system is stopped during data transfer. CONSTITUTION:When reading is finished and processing is finished, an external device 9 sets a busy signal to an L level, which is sent to an original reader. The original reader does not immediately scan the next line even when the busy signal goes to the L level, but detects the rising edge of a start pulse of an image sensor and then scans the next line. The operation above is repeated, only an image signal in an output signal of the image sensor is sent to the external device 9 and the original is read. The busy signal sent from the external device 9 and the image sensor start pulse are inputted to a drive control section 4. A sub-scanning feed pulse is inputted to a timer 5 in this case and the pulse is counted. When the count value is larger than the preset value, the timer 5 gives a light source extinguishing signal to a light source lighting circuit to extinguish the light source.
