PURPOSE:To improve driving performance, by a method wherein viscous cou pling is transmitted to either front and rear wheels through engaging clutch for free to provide one kind with a viscous coupling of 4-driving wheel and 2-wheel drive. CONSTITUTION:When a rail 43 is controlled to an R direct coupling 4WD posi tion, an engaging clutch 40 is shifted to the viscous coupling side. Thus, a trans fer shaft 26 is coupled to a driven gear 22 of a front differential device 4 to from 4-wheel drive effected through rear wheel direct coupling front wheel viscous coupling. When the rail 43 is controlled to an FR position, the engaging clutch 40 is released and brought into a free state, connection between a viscous coupling 30 and a drive gear 22 is disconnected, and a driving deice is brought into 2-drive of FR. This constitution enables arbitrary selection of 4-wheel drive and 2-wheel drive with viscous coupling, resulting in improvement of drivability and starting properties.
