PURPOSE:To maintain the cleaning effect of a blade for a long time by arranging an image forming area and a detection pattern forming area at an interval in the advancing direction of a photosenstive body and impressing the DC component of a separation charger in the areas including the detection pattern. CONSTITUTION:The separation charger 8 is arranged adjacent to a transfer charger 4 and on the photosensitive body 1 in a copying machine of a system which forms a detection pattern toner image 2 on the photosensitive body 1 and controls a toner density. When the electrifying action of the separation charger 8 acts on the toner image 2 of the detection pattern, the DC component of the separation charger 8 reduces the toner attachment of the detection pattern toner image 2, and the cleaning performance of the blade 5 can be substantially improved. Then the separation DC component of the separation charger 8 is switched between the image transfer area of the photosensitive body 1 and its outside, whereby excellent results for paper separation and cleaning the detection pattern toner image can be obtained.
