PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a display brighter and more easily visible by improving the reflection characteristics of the light reflection layer built into a reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A flat panel structure is obtd. by combining a transparent substrate 1 arranged on an incident side and a substrate 2 joined to the substrate 1 and arranged on the opposite side via a prescribed spacing. A guest-host liquid crystal layer 3 is arranged on the substrate 1 side within the spacing of the flat panel and the light reflection layer 9 exists on the substrate 2 side. A quarter-wave plate layer 10 is interposed between the guest-host liquid crystal layer 3 and the light reflection layer 9. Electrodes 6, 11 are formed on the substrate 1 and the substrate 2, respectively, to impress voltages on the guest- host liquid crystal layer 3. The light reflection layer 9 has a rugged reflection surface and scatters and reflects incident light. The angle θ1 of the rugged reflection surface is set at half the total reflected index angle θC of the substrate 1 or below. |
