PURPOSE:To reduce storage capacity and to make index forming work efficient by previously forming an index dictionary. CONSTITUTION:A processor 4 extracts a document specified by an input device from a memory device 5, displays the document on a display device 1 and edits the document in accordance with a processing request inputted from the input device 2. The index dictionary stores documents as a part of a document like a document 6 or as a document only for the index dictionary like a document 7. Prior to the formation of indexes, the index dictionary is formed. At the formation of the index dictionary, the reading of an index is inputted from the input device 2 and the index is sorted in the order of the reading and registered in the index dictionary.
