A contact lens cleaning and disinfecting system is formed as a compact unit with an upper housing portion (1) containing a UV lamp and a lower base portion (2) containing a cleaning/disinfecting chamber (15, 16) which is filled with saline solution, a lens holder (14), a turbulence mechanism (17, 19, 20a) for inducing turbulence in the fluid, and an electronic control unit (21) for operating the UV lamp and the turbulence mechanism in a single cleaning/disinfecting cycle of comparatively short duration. The lens holder (14) has a pair of lower lens holder portions (14a, 14b) for the lenses and an upper bracket (14c) for shading the lenses from direct UV radiation. The turbulence mechanism has a magnetic pedal (20a), tethered on the end of a flexible spring (20b). The pedal is driven by a magnetic flux generator (19) in a subsonic oscillation range to create a whirlpool in the fluid which swirls in and around the lens holder portions. Particles, films, and other deposits dislodged from the lenses are carried by the whirlpool above the upper bracket of the lens holder where they are disinfected by the UV radiation. The UV disinfecting and turbulence cleaning avoids the need for any manual scrubbing, heating of the lenses, detergents, preservatives, or disinfectant chemicals.
