Improved clay, comprising a clayey phyllosilicate (having equidistant layers at 1.5-1.6nm, a cation exchange capacity of 170-1700m eq. per 100g and equidistant redn. of the layers to 1.2-1.4nm by heating to 490deg.C) combined with 0.005-0.5 wt parts of magnesium hydroxide per part of clay, i.e. contg. about 5-33% of magnesium hydroxide, and having an X-ray spectrum where the characteristics of magnesium hydroxide are not present, is new. The acid addn. salts of the clay with carbonic, citric, tartaric, phosphoric and silicic acids are also claimed.
