PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fine-grained powder, in which grains of chromium carbide are dispersed in an Ni-Cr matrix, by allowing a high pressure fluid to collide with a liquid stream consisting of Cr, C, and Ni to crush the liquid stream into droplets and then solidifying these droplets. SOLUTION: At least two constituents selected from the group consisting of chromium carbide compound, nickel-chromium alloy, chromium, nickel, and carbon are melted and formed into a liquid stream. This liquid stream is heated, preferably, up to 1300-1900 deg.C. A high pressure stream for forming fine grains, selected from the group consisting of gas, liquid, and mixture thereof, is allowed to collide with the liquid stream, by which the liquid stream is crushed into droplets. By this procedure, a fine-grained powder of (chromium carbide)-(nickel chromium), in which a chromium carbide phase comprises a large volume proportion, is prepared. The fine-grained powder is thermaly accumulated on a substrate to form an adhesive coating on the substrate. Further, it is preferable to regulate the contents of chromium, nickel, and carbon in the fine-grained powder to 55-92% by weight, 5-40%, and 1-10%, respectively.
