PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a precursor of a modified polyester fiber without having a slimy feeling at the surface of the fiber, and useful for a woven fabric having a soft hand touch feeling by using a specific polyester fiber having a prescribed alkali reduction rate constant. SOLUTION: This modified polyester fiber precursor contains 0.5-5% organic sulfonic acid metal salt of the formula: RSO3 M (R is a 3-30C alkyl, a 7-40C aryl or an alkylaryl; M is an alkali metal) in a polyester consisting of a dicarboxylic acid component such as terephthalic acid and a diol component containing 5-25wt.% mixture of diols of formula I and II based on the total diol residue in the polymer, and has <=15×10<-7> cm/min alkali reduction rate constant. Further, the precursor fiber is treated with a dry heat at >=120 deg.C for >=10sec, further, treating the fiber with an alkaline reduction in >=5% reduction ratio to obtain a modified polyester fiber having streak like groves at <=5μm intervals between grooves, oriented in a fiber axis direction and part of which are divided as fibril like very fine fibers having 0.05-5μm diameter and >=10×m fiber length. |
