PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for synthesizing a metallocene compound, profitably obtaining the compound useful as a catalyst for polymerizing olefins by reacting a specific group IV transition metal compound with a specific ligand compound and subsequently halogenating the reaction product with a halogenating agent. SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing a metallocene compound comprises reacting a group IV transition metal compound of formula I [M<1> is a group I transition metal atom; A is a heterogeneous atom; R is a 1-30C hydrocarbon which may form a ring containing A or A and M<1> : X is a halogen, a 1-10C sulfoxyl, a 1-10C alkoxy; (m) is 1, 2] with a compound of formula II [L<1> , L<2> are each (substituted) cyclopentadienyl, substituted indenyl, (substituted) fluorenyl; B is a 1-20C hydrocarbon, a silylene, a germylene, etc., for binding L<1> and L<2> to each other; M<2> is an alkali(ne earth) metal, etc.,] and subsequently halogenating the obtained metallocene compound of formula III with a halogenating agent. The obtained objective metallocene compound of formula IV (Y is a halogen) is useful as a catalyst for the polymerization of olefins, etc.
