PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating material capable of forming a flat light diffusing layer having high brightness and excellent in heat resistance and solvent resistance, and useful for a liquid crystal display, etc., by including an inorganic binder and synthetic resin particles. SOLUTION: This coating material comprises (A) a cold setting water glass (e.g. an aqueous solution conststing essentially of 23.9% metal alkoxide expressed in terms of a solid content and containing coexisting borate ion and a halogen ion as a catalyst) and (B) heat resistant spherical resin particles [e.g. the one having >=200 deg.C, preferably >=23O deg.C thermally decomposing temperature, >=0.05 difference of refractive index between the resin particle and the cured material of the component A (concretely, a cross-linked polymethyl methacrylate, a cured resin of condensate of benzoguanamine and formaldehyu., etc.), being a mixture of particles having 1.0-1.5 refractive index with particles having 1.55-2.0 refractive index, and further having 1-50μm average particle diameter], and, preferably, the weight ratio of the components A/B is preferably regulated to be (9:1) to (1:9).
