The apparatus (1) for measuring the properties of a material using X-ray radiation comprises an X-ray emitting source, a conveyor (6) for passing the material through the X-ray beams, an X-ray radiation detection device beneath the conveyor and a processor for carrying out property measurements based on the data signals from the detection device. Linear sensors with a linear light-sensitive photodiode containing a scintillation material to convert incoming X-ray radiation into visible light are used in the detection device. Two of the sensors are present, with the photodiodes lying opposite and parallel to each other so that incoming X-ray radiation strikes the sensor nearest the X-ray source and then passes through it to strike the sensor farthest from the X-ray source.
