PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the lightness and contrast of a display by improving the structure of the light reflection layer and quarter-wave plate layer built in a reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: This reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device consists of a first substrate 1 arranged on an incident side and a second substrate 2 joined to the first substrate 1 and arranged on the opposite side via a prescribed spacing. The device is provided with a guest-host liquid crystal layer 3 existing on the first substrate 1 side, the light reflection layer 8 existing on the second substrate 2 side and the quarter-wave plate layer 9 interposed between both layers via a prescribed spacing. Electrodes 10, 11 are respectively formed on the substrate 1 side and the second substrate 2 side to impress voltages on the guest-host liquid crystal layer 3. The light reflection layer 8 has ruggedness on its surface and has a light scattering property. As a result, the lightness of the display device is made higher. The quarter-wave plate layer 9 is formed at a uniform thickness along the ruggedness of the light reflection layer 8 and exactly plays a polarization conversion function. As a result, the contrast of the display device is increased. |
