A box for a coin-operated device, which has a coin-return chute, is provided with anti-theft means. The box has a circuitous route for returned coins between a coin-return mechanism in the box and an opening for retrieval of returned coins. The entrance and exit to the circuitous route are separated vertically. Preferably the coin-return chute has a back wall, an intermediate wall and a front wall. The intermediate wall has a first hole, for passage of a coin, and the front wall has a second hole, for retrieval of the coin. The second hole is preferably horizontally and vertically offset from the first hole. There is a first inclined chute between the back wall and the intermediate wall for directing the coin through the first hole. There is a second inclined chute between the intermediate wall and the first wall for directing the coin downwardly and at right angles to the direction of the travel of the coin as it passes through the first hole, and there is a coin receiver at a lower end of the second chute adjacent to the second hole.
