PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit the use of a four surface-, six surface-, and eight surface- polygon mirrors on one chassis in a laser scanning optical unit. SOLUTION: A collimated light beam emitted form a laser diode holder 1 is converged in the longitudinal direction through a toroidal lens 2, and is reflected and scanned by a polygon mirror 3 focused through fθlens 5 to form an image on an image surface on a photoreceptor drum 8. Then, a polygon motor 4 changes over a reference hole for fitting chassis 6a to a reference hole 9 for fitting an eight-surface polygon motor or a reference hole 10 for fitting a six-surface polygon mirror or a reference hole 11 for fitting four-surface polygon mirror, according to the number of the surfaces of the polygon mirror 3.
