The tying material is used to clamp the label to the bundle of flowers or similar items when this is on a supporting surface (6). Tying material (4) from a storage vessel (1) is passed around the bundle by a swing arm (5), and the labels are delivered from a dispenser (11) to a position through which the bundle passes. A clamp (12) with two plates (14) movable together and apart, hinges between a horizontal position below the dispenser, which is above the surface, and a vertical or inclined one alongside the tying position, in which the arm presses the label via the tying material against the bundle as it passes the material round the latter. The clamp can be arranged to swing in the direction of movement of the bundle, being deflected by the latter as it passes and returning to the vertical or inclined position afterwards.
