Aqueous effluents containing a relatively small amount of organic pollutants, including hydrocarbons and suspended solids, are treated in the claimed device. Treatment takes place in a vessel consisting of a cylinder (2) positioned above a cone (3), coaxial with each other. Effluent for treatment (A) is fed (4) tangentially into the cylinder at high speed. Solids are collected (5) from the base of the cone and treated liquid (B) leaves (6) from the top part of the cylinder. Any solvents, fats and hydrocarbons are trapped by an absorbent cartridge (16) positioned in the centre of the cylinder, which is permeable to water. The absorbent cartridge (16) is cylindrical in shape, surrounding a closed filtration chamber, sealed at its base by a horizontal plate (10). This chamber leads to an outlet chamber (11), separated from the main part of the cylinder (2) by a wall (12) and feeding the treated effluent outlet pipe (6). The effluent feed pipe (4) leads in just below this dividing wall (12). Liquid is recycled (15) from the axis of the cone to the inlet.
