The method for changing the spent anodes of cells for the production of aluminium is effected by igneous electrolysis in which a great part, and preferably the greatest part, of the gaseous products emitted by the spent anodes and by the crusts on the bath drawn from the electrolysis cells are recovered during the cooling phase with the aid of a device for collecting the characteristic effluents from the electrolysis cells. The method includes the temporary storage of the spent anodes and bath crusts in the collecting device during the cooling phase, preferably in a particular zone of the collecting device. The storage zone is isolated from the rest of the collecting device for certain process operations. When the greater part of the gaseous products have been emitted the spent anodes can be finally removed and changed. The device for collecting the gaseous products for putting this method into service is also claimed and comprises a device for overturning the aluminium production cells, an aspiration system and a system for treating the effluent. Also claimed is the device preferably incorporating a degassing and cooling caisson (2), situated at one end of the overturning device (3). The caisson (2) may be put into communication with the aspiration system of the collecting device (1).
