PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve the transmission efficiency of the 2-way information transmission system. SOLUTION: In the video on demand system of a cable television station, a station side distributes a start end of desired information through an outgoing line whose transmission rate is 45Mb/s in real time at a transmission rate of 3Mb/s at which the information is reproduced in real time with respect to an immediate distribution request at a subscriber side and the rest of the desired information is subject to time base compression and the compressed information is distributed in parallel at a transmission rate of 43Mb/s. The subscriber terminal equipment reproduces the start part of the desired information in real time distributed at a transmission rate of 3Mb/s from the station, the rest of the desired information distributed at a transmission rate of 42Mb/s is stored in a tape medium and the rest of the desired information is read at a transmission rate of 3Mb/s from the tape medium after the start part of the desired information is reproduced in real time.
