PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time of defocusing by speedily performing focus control based upon a focus quantity evaluated value even when a lens is at its long focal length position. SOLUTION: In this automatic focusing device provided with a focus function which drives a focus lens 11, a zoom function which drives a zoom lens 12, an HPF 31 for extracting the focus quantity evaluated value from a video signal, etc., to move and control the focus lens 11 to the position where the focus quantity evaluated value becomes maximum, a CPU 22 decides whether or not the said focus quantity evaluated value is 0 and when so, the zoom lens 12 is moved to the short-focal-length side. Further, the zoom position when the focus quantity evaluated value is 0 is stored and when the moving direction of the focus lens 11 is determined, the zoom lens 12 is put back to the stored original zoom position. |
