PURPOSE:To readily obtain the title phosphonite free from contamination by impurities and useful as an intermediate for producing a herbicide in high purity and yield, by reacting a specific methylphosphinasdihalide with ethylene oxide under an inert gas stream. CONSTITUTION:A methylphosphinasdihalide expressed by formula I (X is halogen) is reacted with ethylene oxide under an inert gas stream in the presence of an ethylenehalohydrine catalyst to provide the phosphonite expressed by formula II. Furthermore, in formula I, X is preferably Cl and the catalyst is preferably ethylenechlorohydrin. |
