The starter motor (12) pinion (44) is fixed in a socket (24) displaced axially along the splined (15) motor drive-shaft (14) to engage the pinion in the toothed flywheel ring, by a solenoid actuator (30) mounted on the motor end bracket. The pivoted actuating fork (22) bears against the socket's rear flange (28) and on the base (64) of its front cup (56). Torque is transmitted from the socket to the pinion by an elastomeric annulus (60), adhesively bonded to the pinion skirt (50) and the cup interior (58). Optionally the annulus has axial grooves interlocked with axial ribs on both the latter surfaces. Variants described have alternative resilient elements interposed between socket and pinion.
