The protection arrangement is provided by an electric heating cable (9) placed in proximity to the vine. The cable is supplied from an electric power source (19). A temperature detector (23) measures the temperature, and a supply switch (29) is activated, by comparing the measured temperature with a threshold value. The temperature is regulated by controlling the power supplied (25,27) taking account of a number of factors in the growth of the vine and in the environment. These include the actual development of the vine, the progress of the development over a set period, the weather, the history of the weather over a set period, and the current stage in the development of the vine.
