Mass-production of side impact resisting bars for vehicle

The system is used for manufacture of tubular side-impact resisting bars in a road vehicle. The raw material is a steel band which is cut into a number of shapes (3) with tapered ends. The shapes remain joined together by narrow bars or rods (4) which are left at the ends of the shapes. The long edges of the shapes are then bent to make a U-section (11). Further bending makes a series of slit tubes with the edges touching or close enough together to allow them to be welded together (12,13). The tubes are then hardened by heating (14), eg. inductive heating, immediately followed by quenching, eg. by a spray of water. Finally the little bars or rods are cut through to separate the individual tubes.
