The vent (16) flow channel (18) extends along the roof and has inlet (72) and outlet (74) openings and varies in sectional area lengthways. Thus the venting opening (82) lies in a channel (19) section relatively narrower than the inlet and outlet openings (72,74). The channel tapers continuously from the inlet and then steadily expands to the outlet so the narrowest part of the channel (19) lies halfway along it (76) in the rear part of the channel. The vent (16) is extended by a toggle (24,26) and drive bar (68) from its closed position flush (70) with the main roof (10) and the channel (18) thus below the roof surface into one or more raised positions to bring the channel (18) above the roof surface (10) so as to admit air as a function of vehicle speed. When closed, the vent (16) seals the roof shut. The top ends (28,32) of the toggle levers (24,26) are hinged to the vent and again hinged (34,36) halfway to the roof (10) and to the bar (68) at their bottom ends (64,66).
