A cooling and calibrating unit for an extruded profile(7), especially a window profile, includes a housing which has an inlet and outlet for the profile and is divided into successive chambers(25-30) by calibrating diaphragms(46-50). Coolant flows between the chambers(25-30) via two or more coolant flow passages(117) in the calibrating diaphragms(46-50) or their surrounding area, the passages having different cross-sections and being aligned with each other along the extrusion direction. In a profile cooling and calibrating process within each chamber(25-30) 70-98% of the coolant flows in a transverse direction around the profile(7) before flowing into the next chamber while the remaining 2-30% of the coolant flows through the smaller of the coolant passages(117) between immediately adjacent chambers(25-30). The major and minor flows alternate between each side of the profile(7) at each successive chamber(25-30) to reverse the flushing effect in successive chambers. |
